Brake Testing Equipment FAQs

01 What is a brake tester?

A brake tester measures the braking force at each wheel of a vehicle. It shows whether the brakes work evenly and meet roadworthiness standards. Workshops use one to find faults early, and to carry out routine checks on their own fleet. Totalkare supplies brake testers for HGVs, buses, coaches, trailers, vans and agricultural vehicles.

02 How often should commercial vehicle brakes be tested?

Operators should follow the DVSA’s guidance on safety inspection intervals, which depends on the vehicle type and how it is used. A brake performance check is normally part of each safety inspection. Testing in-house makes frequent checks quicker and cheaper than booking an outside test.

03 What is the difference between an in-ground and a mobile brake tester?

An in-ground brake tester is fitted permanently into the workshop floor and suits busy, regular testing. A mobile brake tester can be moved and does not need groundworks, so it suits workshops that want flexibility or have limited space. Both measure braking force at each wheel.

04 What is load simulation and when do I need it?

Load simulation lets you test a vehicle as if it were fully loaded, even when it is empty. This helps you get results that reflect real driving conditions. It is useful for operators who test trailers or empty vehicles and want results closer to the official test.

05 Do you offer a brake tester for Class 7 vehicles?

Yes. Our Class 7 In-Ground Brake Tester is designed for Class 7 MOT bays, which cover larger vans. It can be installed alongside a vehicle inspection pit, a light commercial four post lift and a play detector for a complete bay.
