Choosing the Right Vehicle Lift: The Specification Details That Matter Most

When it comes to investing in a vehicle lift, most buyers start with lifting capacity. That makes sense. But focusing on capacity alone can mean buying a lift that is technically rated for your vehicles but physically unable to accommodate them. The dimensions of a lift matter just as much as how much weight it can take.

Vehicle lifts are a long-term investment. A well-chosen lift will serve a workshop for many years, often through periods of growth, fleet changes, and shifts in the types of vehicles being serviced. Despite this, it is common for buyers to focus on a single figure: the maximum lifting capacity. 

Lifting capacity matters, but it does not tell you whether the vehicles you work on will actually fit the lift. A lift rated for 30,000kg is useless if the wheelbase of your vehicles is longer than the platform, or if the vehicle is too wide to drive on.

1. Platform Length 

Platform length is the specification that varies most between different types of commercial vehicle lift, which makes it one of the easiest ways to filter out unsuitable options. 

The platform length is the distance between the front and rear of the lifting platform. You can compare it directly against the wheelbase of the vehicles you need to service. If the wheelbase is longer than the platform, the vehicle simply will not sit on the lift correctly.

2. Drive-Through Width 

Drive-through width is the measurement that determines whether a vehicle can actually get onto the lift in the first place. It is the usable gap from one side of the lift to the other. 

For most standard commercial vehicles, this is not a limiting factor. But if your workshop services wide-body vehicles, specialist vehicles, or anything outside standard dimensions, it is worth checking carefully.

3. Platform Width 

Platform width is a slightly different consideration. It applies specifically to lifts that support the vehicle by its wheels, and it determines whether the tyres will sit correctly on the lifting surface. 

If the platform is too narrow for the tyre, the vehicle cannot be supported safely. For workshops that work across different vehicle categories with varying tyre sizes, it is important to check that the platform width covers the full range. 

Lifts that support the vehicle through a different contact point, such as the two-post lift which uses arm adapters, or in-ground and mobile column lifts which can use various load points, are generally less affected by this constraint.

4. Lifting Capacity 

Lifting capacity is the specification most buyers focus on first, and it is of course important. But it belongs in context with the dimensional measurements above. A lift that can handle the weight of your heaviest vehicle still needs to be able to physically accommodate it.
