How to prepare your workshop for annual vehicle inspections
Timing is everything with MOTs.
Vehicles have strict deadlines to take their tests and pass. And if they fail on the day, it’s a setback that adds more time to the whole process.
So if you’re a workshop looking ahead to your annual inspections, you need everything running as smoothly as it can.
Here’s how to prepare before the MOTs start rolling in:
Get your equipment calibrated
Modern testing equipment is about precise measurements — sensitive instruments designed for accurate results.
Just a small variation in the condition of your equipment can lead to inaccurate readings. And over time, even the best bits of kit can start to degrade.
So for the best results (and the best chance of passing the MOT), you need equipment like brake testers and headlamp testers to be routinely calibrated.
DVSA regulations already require you to have your equipment calibrated at regular intervals. That’s usually every 6 months or every year, depending on the type of kit.
But for the most accurate test results before the MOT, you should aim to get your equipment calibrated as close to the test date as possible.
Since you’re no longer allowed to calibrate your own equipment, that usually means tweaking your service contract to arrange dates with your provider — so your equipment’s fresh and finely tuned for the times when it matters most.
Stock up on spare parts
If you’re testing in advance and you find a problem (or worse, something pops up in the MOT), your teams need to be able to fix it quickly and get your vehicles back on track.
It’s no good ordering spare parts when you find a fault. Instead, you need to have the essentials on site and ready to go.
At a minimum, that means keeping a stock of the parts that are most likely to fail, such as:
- Brake pads
- Bulbs
- Tyres
- Suspension components.
With the most common parts instantly available, you can avoid days of waiting — and keep the downtime of your vehicles to an absolute minimum.
Review your workshop layout
If you’re coming up to a batch of MOTs (or you’re about to test your entire fleet), now’s the time to think about optimising your workshop to match the high demand that’s coming.
That could mean simple changes, like:
- Planning new routes to keep vehicles moving
- Storing equipment and parts closer to the workstations that need them
- Using mobile equipment for flexible space.
But it could also mean investing in ‘stackable’ equipment, like an In-Ground Brake Tester installed over an inspection pit, or jacking beams installed on your vehicle lifts.
By building workstations that include several pieces of kit, your teams can carry out multiple tests and services in one location — without moving the vehicle or losing time.
Bring your teams up to speed
Preparing your equipment and your premises is essential. But it’s your staff that make it all happen — which means they need to be just as prepared as your workshop.
Your teams need to be:
- Up to date with the latest DVSA changes
- Fully trained in every piece of kit they use
- Made extra aware of safety practices during busy periods.
On top of that, you may need to make changes to your usual staff schedule. As well as having qualified people on site for each part of the MOT, you might also need extra staff available — to give your vehicles a second opinion before the final signoff to improve the chances of your vehicles getting a pass first time.
