Why wheel alignment matters for the lifespan of your vehicles

Totalkare announces partnership with Hunter Engineering Company for the UK supply of heavy duty wheel alignment equipment

Most workshops know the importance of vehicle alignment. It’s about road safety, driver fatigue, and keeping the rising costs of fuel under control.

But there’s another side to wheel alignment that doesn’t get the same attention:

What it means for the health of your vehicles — and their long-term lifespan.

Here’s why the right vehicle alignment is more important than you think:

Suspension

When your wheels are out of alignment, the weight of the vehicle isn’t evenly distributed. The wheels are pulling in different angles and directions, which creates unusual forces on your suspension system.

You’re adding stress to the ball joints and wheel bearings — directional stress that they weren’t designed for.

While every suspension system is designed for a range of forces, those limits are intended for ‘normal’ directions and angles. So when your vehicle isn’t aligned, you’re putting pressure on components in ways that they weren’t designed for.

Over time, this extra strain can cause premature wear and tear, reducing the lifespan of your suspension and its components, and adding extra costs from replacements and repair.

Steering

With improper alignment, your drivers are fighting a constant battle to readjust the steering. It either feels loose and unresponsive, or there’s a drift that needs correcting. (Or both.)

This continual need for extra steering puts excessive strain on the components in your steering systems. They have to work harder — and get used more often — to counter the effects of poor wheel alignment, leading to more wear and tear from overuse.

And the result?

Your steering components wear down faster. They’re quicker to damage, and they simply won’t last as long.

Brakes

Expensive components are one thing to worry about. But even worse: poor alignment can have an effect on how your vehicles brake.

(And that’s one thing you don’t want to ignore.)

As well as the risks of poor road contact from tyres that have worn unevenly, the brake pads themselves can end up wearing down unevenly.

With one side of the brake pad wearing down at a different rate to the other side, the overall efficiency of the braking system is reduced.

That means more frequent replacements, and extra costs — reducing the lifespan of every brake pad you buy.

And that’s before you start to think about what happens if your brakes fail. Nothing affects the longevity of your vehicles like their ability to stop in an emergency!

Time for a check-up?

The right wheel alignment isn’t just about fuel and tyres — it’s a full-body issue that has knock-on effects for almost every system your vehicles rely on.

So if you’re not making wheel alignment a regular part of your servicing and maintenance, it’s time to get serious.
